while Restraint stands for a society that is strict on its people. In high indulgence culture, the people have the freedom to enjoy life and the society doesn’t restrain the people. Self Restraint The final index in Hofstede’s six-dimensional model of national culture describes a society’s relationship to pleasure and self-discipline and the abandon with which members of a society express themselves. Geert Hofstede, assisted by others, came up with six basic issues that society needs to come to term with in order to organize itself. These are called dimensions of culture. Each of them has been expressed on a scale that runs roughly from 0 to 100.
6. Indulgence versus Restraint (presence of strict social norms) Hofstede developed this cultural dimensions theory through his extensive research in fifty different nations regarding people’s behavior in organizations and how they collaborated (Hofstede 1994).

restraint The sixth cultural dimension is about freedom and being able and allowed to have good things in life. Indulgent cultures allow their people to fulfil their human basic pleasures and desires. Hierin worden de vijf cultuurdimensies van Hofstede behandeld. Met wat Googelen kwam ik op deze website terecht en daar zie ik dat het niet om vijf maar op zes dimensies gaat. “Indulgence” ontbreekt.

This Quick Take discusses the Indulgence versus Restraint dimension (IND). Indulgence is defined as “a society that allows relatively free gratification of basic and natural human desires related to enjoying life and having fun.” Its counterpart is defined as “a society that controls gratification of needs and regulates it by means of strict social norms.” Indulgence is the last dimension in Hofstede’s cultural model. It refers to the degree to which a culture allows human nature to direct its behavior. Indulgence is related to basic needs. It indicates the extent to which a society pays attention to these drives.
